LONDON (Reuters) - A man was killed on Thursday after a collision between a car and train travelling at 100 miles per hour on a level crossing near Norwich, police said.

The Colchester to Norwich train collided with the silver Vauxhall Astra car at around 7:30 a.m. on an automatic level crossing near Swainsthorpe, Norfolk police said.

"There's one fatality in the car. There's no derailment and no injuries on the train," a police spokeswoman said.

The train, which had 44 passengers on board, remained safe and upright, she added. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will carry out inquiries.

The incident comes a day after the Office of Rail Regulation said level crossings presented the biggest risk of accidents that could kill passengers.

It called for no new crossings to be built on any railway and to "take all reasonable opportunities" to remove, replace or maker safer existing sites.

Currently there are about 7,700 level crossings on the national rail network.

The death comes a week after the Virgin Trains crash in Cumbria which killed an elderly woman. Initial findings in that incident blamed a faulty set of points.
