Soccer-Xanthi climb to sixth after 3-2 win at Atromitos
ATHENS |
ATHENS Feb 2 (Reuters) - Xanthi almost let a three-goal lead slip but held on to beat Atromitos 3-2 in the Greek Super League on Saturday thanks to Rafal Grzelak's double.
The win takes Xanthi up one place to sixth on 28 points from 19 games while Atromitos are 10th with 21 points.
Polish midfielder Grzelak, who joined Xanthi in January, put the club from northern Greece on the path to victory when he crossed for Stavros Lambriakos to score in the 28th minute.
Grzelak netted himself on the stroke of halftime before making it 3-0 on the hour with a freekick.
Atromitos struck back eight minutes later through striker Thanassis Tsigas, who added a second with an acrobatic effort in the 78th minute to set up an exciting bfinish.
In Saturday's other game, Larissa won 1-0 at Levadiakos to move further away from the relegation zone.
The home side missed a penalty in the 16th minute through Brazilian midfielder Anderson. Larissa capitalised 15 minutes later when Nektarios Alexandrou prodded home the only goal.
Larissa's second consecutive win moves them up one place to 9th on 22 points. Levadiakos stay 12th, just above the relegation places, with 18 points.
