Soccer-Roundup-Spain give go-ahead for Catalunya friendly
MADRID |
MADRID Feb 29 (Reuters) - Soccer news in brief from around the world:
* The Spanish Football Federation has given the go-ahead for a Catalan regional selection to play Argentina at the Nou Camp on May 24.
Catalunya will have to field a second-string side as many of their players will be preparing to hook up with the Spain squad ahead of Euro 2008. Argentina are likely to include Barca players Lionel Messi and Gabriel Milito in their squad.
* Ratko Butorovic, the president of Serbian first division club Vojvodina Novi Sad, was released from custody on Friday pending further investigation after he was arrested last month on corruption charges.
The judicial authorities said they released him after the mandatory 30-day detention on grounds that "there is no danger he might repeat the offense he has been charged with."
Butorovic has been ordered not to leave his Novi Sad residence until the case has been completed, told to report to the court in regular 30-day intervals and had his passport temporarily confiscated.
* English League Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur have a doubt over central defender Jonathan Woodgate for Saturday's Premier League game at Birmingham City.
Woodgate, who headed Spurs' winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Chelsea in last Sunday's League Cup final at Wembley, is nursing a sprained ankle.
* Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has attempted to defuse a controversy following the publication of photos taken of him holding up a Real Madrid shirt given to him on his birthday by Real chief Ramon Calderon.
"The players swap shirts without anything happening and this is no different," Cerezo told Radio Marca on Friday.
* Brazilian defender Felipe has extended his contract with Udinese by two years until 2012, the Serie A club announced on their Web site (www.udinese.it).
