VIENNA May 30 Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria beat Malta 5-1 win in Graz on Friday, with 38-year-old Ivica Vastic, who will be the tournament's oldest player, scoring a 13th goal for his country.
Austria's win, the first of the year, was a much-needed boost before they face tournament opponents Germany, Croatia and Poland in Group B at next month's tournament .
Rene Aufhauser opened the scoring in the eighth minute heading home a corner from captain Andreas Ivanschitz. Three minutes later Roland Linz scored the second.
Malta's Michael Mifsud exploited Austria's brief loss of concentration in the 41st minute, after a solitary break past Austria goalkeeper Alexander Manninger.
Linz scored again from a penalty in the 67th minute and substitute Vastic made it 4-1 10 minutes later.
Twenty-year-old Martin Harnik claimed his second goal for Austria when he hit home in extra time.
Coach Josef Hickersberger, who has been tight-lipped about the look of his final squad, made six changes to the starting team he fielded in a 1-1 draw against Nigeria earlier this week. (Writing by Alexandra Hudson, editing by Clare Lovell)
