MITROVICA, Kosovo, June 14 (Reuters) - A Kosovo police officer and a man were wounded on Saturday after a shootout in the flashpoint town of Mitrovica, police said.

An unidentified man approached police in front of their station and opened fire, wounding an officer. Officers returned fire and shoot the man, police said.

"The shooter and the officer are in stable condition," a Mitrovica police spokesman said.

Kosovo declared independence on February 17, nine years after NATO bombs expelled Serb troops accused of ethnic cleansing. Since 1999 the United Nations took control of the then Serbian province.

Mitrovica has been the scene of clashes between Albanians and Serbs living there. (Reporting by Branislav Krstic, writing by Fatos Bytyci, editing by Richard Meares)
