MOSCOW, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said it had refinanced part of its foreign debt and increased its overall borrowing with a further loan, adding it could not gauge any further impact of the liquidity crisis on its operations.
Gazprom, which on Tuesday also reported second-quarter results, said it borrowed $153 million from Russia's Vneshekonombank (VEB) in December to refinance a part of a loan it took from Deutsche Bank in 2004.
It also said it took a $250 million loan from Societe Generale (SOGN.PA) in November.
Gazprom, the world's largest gas producer and a supplier of a quarter of Europe's gas needs, said the liquidity crisis has affected companies' ability to attract loans and made borrowing more expensive.
"At the moment the management can not certainly assess the impact of further decrease in financial markets' liquidity and the growing instability of forex and stock markets on the group's financial state," Gazprom said in the earnings release.
It said it took the loan from SocGen at LIBOR plus 360 basic points, while the VEB loan had a margin of 500 bps over LIBOR. Both facilities mature in 2009 and bear the highest interest rates the company has faced since July.
Gazprom, one of Russia's most indebted companies, said its net debt fell by 32 percent to 836.95 billion roubles as of June 31 2008 from 1.23 trillion as of Dec. 31, mostly due to the de-consolidation of Gazprombank starting from June.
Gazprom said in June it would cut its stake in the bank to 25 percent from 42 it used to have.
The firm said its net profit under the International Accounting Standards rose by 85 percent to 609.35 billion roubles ($20.84 billion) in the first six months of 2008 compared to the same period of 2007. Revenues increased by 52 percent to 1.74 trillion roubles.
The results were supported by higher prices and a 44 percent increase in gas sales, mainly to Europe, Gazprom said.
In the second quarter alone, Gazprom's net profit almost tripled to 323.30 billion roubles from 112.91 billion in the same three months of 2007, while revenues increased by 58 percent to 840.25 billion.
Gazprom shares were up by 0.07 percent on Russia's top MICEX bourse, outpeforming the broader oil and gas index .MCXOG which fell by 0.95 percent, and were down by 0.98 percent on the London Stock Exchange (GAZPq.L) at 0947 GMT.
