FACTBOX-Countries that import gas via Moldova

Wed Apr 1, 2009 1:06pm BST

April 1 (Reuters) - Russian natural gas supplies to Turkey
fell on Wednesday after an explosion on a Moldovan section of a
major pipeline and flows to some other countries fed by the
pipeline could also drop, according to pipeline operators.
Moldova closed the Russian transit pipeline after a fire
erupted at about 0230 GMT following the blast in the separatist
region of Transdniestria, government officials said.

TURKEY -- Russia meets about 67 percent of annual gas
demand*
In addition to the pipeline that feeds Turkey via Ukraine
and Moldova, Russia supplies gas through the Blue Stream
pipeline under the Black Sea which has a capacity of about 45
million cubic metres (mcm) a day.
Iran also supplies Turkey and increased its exports from 12
to 18 mcm/day during January's Russia-Ukraine gas crisis,
Iranian diplomatic sources said at the time.

BULGARIA - About 96 percent of annual demand for gas is met
by Russia**
Most of the Russian supplies to the country come via Moldova
and the country's supplies fell by 70 percent on April 1.

Bulgaria was one of the worst hit countries during the
Russia-Ukraine gas crisis in January.

GREECE -- Russia meets about 82 percent of annual gas
demand* but Greece relies more on oil for heating and power
production than on gas.
According to Greek gas company Depa, gas accounts for about
20 percent of Greece's energy needs, with about 9 million cubic
metres per day needed to cover domestic demand.
About 5-6 million cubic metres (mcm) come from Russia, via
Ukraine and then Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria.

MACEDONIA -- Almost all Macedonia's gas comes from Russia*
via Moldova. But just one percent of its overall energy supply
comes from natural gas, according to a recent study.
The country's main steel exporter was forced to halt
production in January after supplies from Russia were cut.

ROMANIA -- About 28 percent of annual demand for gas met by
Russia*
According to Romania's economy ministry, the country imports
35 percent of annual gas consumption from Russia and had not
experienced any drop in pressure on Tuesday morning, although it
does get gas via Moldova. [ID:nL1936365]
Romania produces some of its own gas and is also supplied
through Russian gas pipelines running through Ukraine that do
not cross Moldova.
