Australia opposition says won't back carbon plan

CANBERRA May 4 (Reuters) - Australia's opposition leader called the government's planned emissions trading scheme "flawed" on Monday and said he would not support it, adding that there was no need to rush legislation now that the scheme has been delayed.

Australia's government will delay a planned carbon emissions trading scheme by a year to mid-2011, and will offer more support to major polluting industries to help them adapt, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Monday.

The government needs either opposition support or the support of a group of independents and greens to pass its plans through the upper house. (Reporting by Michael Perry)
