Transformers sets 2009 box office record
LONDON |
LONDON (Reuters) - "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" set a 2009 opening box office record in the UK over the weekend, according to Screen International on Tuesday.
The effects-rich, alien vs robot war movie took 8.3 million pounds in its first three days, comfortably breaking the previous record of 6.9 million pounds set earlier this month by the latest Terminator film.
Last week's No. 1, booze-soaked lads' comedy "The Hangover," was down in second place, just above Ben Stiller's comedy sequel "Night At The Museum 2" which was unchanged at three.
"Terminator Salvation," the fourth film in the franchise and the first not to star Arnold Schwarzenegger, slipped two places to four.
"Angels and Demons," the follow-up to "The Da Vinci Code," stayed at five while director Sam Raimi's chiller about curses and mayhem in the banking world, "Drag Me to Hell," fell two places to six.
"Star Trek," the remake of the classic 1960s TV series, was down one place at seven while ex-footballer Eric Cantona stayed at eight with "Looking for Eric."
Horror thriller "The Last House on the Left" was down two spots at nine and "Last Chance Harvey" with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, was down one place at 10.
