Sterling falls further; euro rises above 90 pence
LONDON |
LONDON Nov 20 (Reuters) - Sterling extended losses on Friday, with the euro moving back above the 90 pence level on concerns over the UK's deteriorating fiscal position.
Sterling has remained under pressure after data on Thursday showed UK public finances deteriorated almost twice as fast as expected last month, causing worries to resurface that record debt levels could threaten the UK's triple-A debt rating.
The pound has also suffered as investors take profits on riskier currencies, along with currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars.
The euro rose 0.7 percent on the day to hit a one-week high of 90.03 pence EURGBP=D4 against the pound.
Sterling also hit a one-week low against the dollar GBP=D4 of $1.6525.
