 Dec 31 (Reuters) - Britain's FTSE 100 .FTSE ended 2009
with a gain of 22 percent, bouncing back after a dismal 2008 to
post its best annual performance since 1997, as the global
economy recovered from its worst crisis since the Great
Depression.
The index is still down 20 percent from a multiyear peak
reached in mid-2007 before fears over toxic assets in banks'
balance sheets triggered a credit crisis and a sharp global
economic downturn.
