TAKE-A-LOOK-Colombia election tests Uribe coalition

Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:44am GMT

Colombia's former foreign minister Noemi Sanin won the
country's Conservative Party candidacy for May's presidential
election in a decision that risks splitting President Alvaro
Uribe's political coalition.
Sanin will run against front-running former defense minister
Juan Manuel Santos of Uribe's U Party. Uribe is popular for his
crackdown on left-wing rebels and his successor is expected to
adhere closely to his security and pro-business policies.
The U Party led by Santos and the allied Conservative Party
scored a majority in Colombia's parliament on Sunday. But the
solid Conservative showing is likely to dampen proposals the party
join Santos under a unity candidate.
