LONDON (Reuters) - Prestigious department store Harrods is not for sale, it said on Tuesday, following a media report it had received a takeover approach from a Gulf-based investor.
"For some time we have been aware of gossip circulating over a possible sale, and we took the decision to reassure staff this morning that this was not the case via a store-wide announcement," Harrods said in a statement.
"We are happy to confirm that Harrods is not for sale and is not being sold."
The Knightsbridge store, owned by businessman Mohamed al Fayed since 1985, declined to comment on whether it had received a takeover approach or held any talks on a potential deal.
Sky News quoted unnamed sources as saying it had been approached by a Gulf-based investor, possibly the Qatar Investment Authority.
