Golf-Rowdy Sawgrass fan subdued with stun gun

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida May 7 (Reuters) - A rowdy spectator was subdued with a stun gun by police at the Players Championship on Friday, four days after a teenage fan was detained in similar fashion at a Philadelphia baseball game.
According to police, a belligerent golf fan resisted arrest several times after heckling a player on the 11th hole during the second round at the TPC Sawgrass.
"We asked him several times to cease his activities but this met with a negative result," Sgt. Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office told Reuters.
"After asking him several times to cease or leave the course, he was told he was being placed under arrest. Again he resisted when officers put their hands on him.
"So he was given what we call a 'drive stun' where the cartridge is removed from the device. It's similar to the old stun gun and is a pain compliance technique."
Although the incident report had not yet been completed, Mulligan said the golf fan would probably be charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
In a statement, the PGA Tour said: "Anything that disrupts the competition or the enjoyment of our fans will be dealt with accordingly, as was the case today."
On Monday, police at Citizen's Bank Park used a Taser to restrain a teenage baseball fan after he interrupted a game between the Phillies and the St Louis Cardinals.
The incident triggered a debate over whether the use of such force was appropriate. (Editing by Frank Pingue; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
