Afghan peace jirga backs Karzai's peace plan

KABUL, June 4 (Reuters) - Afghan elders and other notables at a peace conference in the capital on Friday endorsed proposals by President Hamid Karzai to seek peace with the Taliban.

"We must initiate peace effort with full force," said Qiyamuddin Kashaf, deputy chairman of a traditional jirga, or gathering, Karzai called to rally national support for making overtures to the insurgents.
