June 23 |
June 23 (Reuters) - Here are some developments in BP Plc's (BP.L)(BP.N) Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the largest in U.S. history.
TOP DEVELOPMENTS
* More oil than usual spilled into the Gulf on Wednesday after a partial shutdown of siphoning because of an undersea accident. A remotely operated submarine hit the containment cap being used to capture oil flowing from the blown-out well.
* Crews were reinstalling the cap atop the leaking well late on Wednesday, BP said. [ID:nN23161792]
* U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Wednesday he will issue a new moratorium on offshore drilling deeper than 500 feet (150 metres) with stronger explanation why it is needed, to meet a judge's objections. [ID:nLDE65M1LW]
* Salazar told a Senate subcommittee the new moratorium will be flexible and could be adjusted to accommodate more deepwater drilling. [ID:nN23116856]
SPREADING IMPACT, REACTION
* In Louisiana, hopes have grown there will be a quick resumption of offshore drilling that is key to the state's economy. [ID:nN23238129]
* Florida took its worst hit yet from the oil spill as thick, oily sludge washed ashore on Pensacola Beach and emergency workers found a stranded dolphin. [ID:nN23127582]
* Mississippi's state treasurer said the spill is not having a big impact on tax revenues, no more than $10 to $15 million. [ID:nRTV117532]
COMPANY NEWS
* New York state's pension fund will sue BP for investment losses after the slide of the company's stock price due to the spill, a state official said. [ID:nN23220822]
* BP shares closed flat in London and New York on Wednesday.
POLITICS, POLICY
* President Barack Obama postponed a meeting with U.S. senators to discuss proposed energy legislation. [ID:nN22171155]
* The House of Representatives voted to give subpoena power to the spill investigation commission appointed by Obama. The move will enable the panel to compel testimony. [ID:nN23253049]
* House Democrats are crafting legislation to tighten oil industry practices, with a focus on deepwater drilling. [ID:nN23253122]
* A new U.S. offshore oil and gas drilling agency will include an internal investigation team to root out misconduct by government and industry. [ID:nN23175010]
* A majority of Americans still support offshore drilling despite the spill, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday. [ID:nN22138822]
SPILL CONTAINMENT EFFORTS
* BP said recovery systems collected or burned 27,100 barrels (1.1 million gallons/4.3 million litres) of crude in 24 hours on Tuesday.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"It might be that there are demarcations that can be made based on reservoirs where we actually do know the pressures and the risks associated with that versus those reservoirs which are exploratory in nature," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on adjusting the six-month deepwater drilling moratorium.
