ATHENS, July 27 (Reuters) - Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT), Greece's third-largest lender, said on Tuesday it sold a 1 billion euro ($1.29 billion) covered bond to boost liquidity.

"The covered bond may be pledged with the European Central Bank as collateral for liquidity purposes," the lender said in a statement.

The sale, which took place on Friday, is part of a recently established programme to sell 8 billion euros of covered bonds, Alpha said.
