UPDATE 2-FACTBOX-Security developments in Yemen

Sept 4 (Reuters) - Yemen is trying to quell a resurgent regional arm of al Qaeda that has increased attacks on Western and regional targets.

At the same time, it is trying to cement a truce with Shi'ite rebels to end a civil war in the north that has raged on and off since 2004, and to end a separatist rebellion in the south.

Following are recent security developments in Yemen (* denotes new or updated item):

* ABYAN, Sept 4 - Fourteen al Qaeda suspects arrested in the restive province of Abyan over the past few days, the Interior Ministry says on its website.

LAHJ, Sept 4 - Two soldiers and two militants are killed in continued clashes in the southerly province of Lahj, during which one military vehicle is set ablaze, a security official says.

LAHJ, Sept 4 - One bystander is killed and four are wounded when shooting breaks out between gunmen and security forces in Lahj, a local official says.

ABYAN, Sept 3 - Authorities arrest two al Qaeda militants, including a top figure identified as Salah al-Damani, in the restive town of Lawdar in the southerly Abyan province, state media say.

SANAA, Sept 3 - The government rejects as baseless an Amnesty International report accusing Yemen of violating human rights as it fights al Qaeda and other opponents.

ABYAN, Sept 3 - Suspected al Qaeda gunmen kill one soldier and wound another at a checkpoint in Zinjibar, capital of Abyan province, the scene of a series of clashes in the past three months, a security official says.
