UPDATE 1-Microsoft sues Motorola over Android phones

* Microsoft says Motorola infringes 9 patents with phones

* Files actions in trade, federal courts

SEATTLE Oct 1 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) sued Motorola Inc MOT.N for patent infringement on the handset maker's line of Android phones, the latest development in a web of legal actions in the evolving smartphone business.

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, said on Friday that it sued Motorola for infringement of nine Microsoft patents in the Android-based smartphones, which run on software built by Google Inc (GOOG.O). Microsoft makes its own Windows phone software.

The patents relate to synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power, Microsoft said in a statement.

A Motorola spokeswoman did not have an immediate comment.

Microsoft said it filed actions at the International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. (Reporting by Bill Rigby. Editing by Robert MacMillan)
