CSC Drives the Completion of the National Prison Health IT Program, Supporting Better Healthcare in All 136 English Prisons

CSC (NYSE: CSC) announced today that the final prison in England has gone live with its prison healthcare solution. This completes the national rollout to 136 prisons and provides healthcare professionals with access to a single electronic record for each offender.

The solution, implemented by CSC and based on SystmOne clinical software developed by TPP, allows offender healthcare records to be kept up to date and ensures that healthcare needs are met with the most appropriate and timely treatments. This technology is particularly vital given the transitory nature of the prison population and its complex healthcare requirements.

With more than 400,000 movements of offenders between prisons each year, healthcare teams will no longer need to rely on time consuming paper-based processes or expect legacy computer systems, which may not be compatible across the prison estate, to communicate with one another. The solution supports a seamless process of care and stores electronic records centrally so that healthcare professionals can, almost instantly, follow an offender through the prison system. By providing access to better information, it also reduces the risk of poor clinical decisions and saves substantial amounts of clerical time.

The prison solution was first tested by early adopters in 2006, with subsequent deployments across the north, midlands and east of England, where CSC acts as the local service provider for NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CfH). It was the success of the solution — already giving healthcare professionals, whether in a GP surgery, a hospice, or community healthcare facility access to a single, shared electronic healthcare record — that prompted the prison service and the Department of Health to adopt it across the whole of England. The national roll out began in earnest in 2009, completing in March 2011.

The scale and pace of the program has been made possible through the successful collaboration between CSC, NHS CfH, the offender health team at the Department of Health, SHAs, PCTs, the National Offender Management Service and TPP. CSC’s proven deployment approach enabled the rapid delivery of the solution across the full English prison estate, ensuring benefits could be realized quickly by healthcare teams and delivering the program in line with expectations.
