PARIS May 23 (Reuters) - World number one Caroline Wozniacki opened her quest for a first grand slam title with a 6-0 6-2 demolition of Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm in the French Open first round on Monday.

The Dane was not even born when Date-Krumm made her debut at Roland Garros in 1989 but her sheer power completely overwhelmed the 40-year-old. A sparse crowd witnessed the encounter after a late switch of courts but the sprinkling of spectators still managed a large cheer when the Japanese finally won a game in the second game of the second set.

Wozniacki next plays Aleksandra Wozniak in the second round after the Canadian beat another Japanese, Junri Namigata. (Reporting by Mark Meadows; Editing by Clare Fallon; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
