FACTBOX - Heathrow airport terminal 5
(Reuters) - British Airways cancelled a fifth of flights from its newly built terminal 5 at Heathrow on Friday as the chaos from its opening spilled into a second day.
Following are some key facts about terminal 5:
THE BUILDING
-- Touted as the answer to the delays passengers can face at the other four terminals at Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport, the open-plan terminal 5 is Britain's largest enclosed space, equivalent to the size of about 50 soccer pitches.
-- Terminal 5 was built by Heathrow airport operator BAA, which is owned by Spanish construction firm Ferrovial.
-- The $8.6 billion (4.31 billion pound) building, designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, can handle thirty million passengers a year.
-- Terminal 5 consists of one main terminal and two satellite terminals that cover a space as large as London's Hyde Park. It has as many as 60 aircraft stands -- 14 of which have been designed to cater for supersize Airbus A380s.
-- Laing O'Rourke, Britain's biggest privately-owned construction company, helped build terminal 5.
