NAPIER, New Zealand, March 25 (Reuters) - New Zealand made a solid start chasing 553 to win the deciding third test against England with Matthew Bell and Jamie How guiding them through to 48 for no wicket at lunch on the fourth day on Tuesday.

Bell, who had a high score of 29 in the series, was 35 not out, including seven boundaries all off the bowling of James Anderson.

How was more watchful and had made 11 at the break, after England declared their second innings at 467 for seven about 30 minutes into the day's play.

Anderson, who conceded 54 runs in seven overs in New Zealand's first innings, had given away 30 off five overs in the second before he was replaced by Stuart Broad.

England's Andrew Strauss top-scored with 177 and Ian Bell made 110 in the tourists' second innings.

The hosts have scored in excess of 400 only twice before when batting fourth, both times against England, but they lost on each occasion. Their highest successful run chase was 324 for five against Pakistan at Christchurch in 1994.

Strauss added four singles to his overnight 173 before he was caught by Bell at mid-off after advancing down the pitch to off-spinner Jeetan Patel from the 11th ball of the day.  Continued...
