Golf-Veteran Frost stays cool in gusting winds

ASH, England, July 5 (Reuters) - Winds gusting up to 50 kph meant patience was a virtue in the European Open third round on Saturday and few players performed better than veteran David Frost.

The 48-year-old South African has won more than 20 titles around the world, including 10 in the United States, but is without a win since the 1999 South African Open.

Frost, who owns his own vineyard, produced a vintage display at the London Club as a three-under-par 69 pushed him within six strokes of leader Ross Fisher of Britain.

"If you had told me I was only going to have one bogey today I would have taken that," he told reporters after moving into third position on 10-under 206. "You have just got to work with your caddie in these conditions and play to positions on the green where you can make a putt. There was a lot of planning and a lot of patience."

Frost has made 13 consecutive cuts in Europe this season without achieving a top-10 finish.

"I have been playing very steadily. I just have to try and find a tournament where I play four good rounds, rather than leaving one somewhere in the hotel," he joked.

"I have always said as long as you keep knocking on the door, sooner or later it is going to open. If it's not tomorrow, it may be next week."

The forecast for Sunday's final round is for more wind and Frost said that might suit him.
