Briefs 4-Croatia captain Kovac ponders post-Euro 2008 retirement
May 12, (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world:
Soccer - Croatia captain Niko Kovac could end his international career after Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland in June, where he expects his country to reach the last eight.
"I am closer to the decision of hanging up my international boots than staying on for another campaign," the 36-year-old Salzburg defensive midfielder, who has won 75 caps and scored 12 goals for Croatia, told daily Slobodna Dalmacija.
"I will play for another year at Salzburg for sure and the club has made me an open offer to take up any position I choose when I decide to retire," he said.
Soccer - Argentina great Diego Maradona, 47, scored a penalty and rolled back the years with some exquisite passing as two teams made up of players and celebrities drew 6-6 in a charity match in Rome.
Injured AS Roma captain Francesco Totti coached one of the teams while Formula One driver Giancarlo Fisichella was among those on the scoresheet.
Soccer - Grenoble will play in the French first division for the first time in 45 years next season after a 0-0 home draw with Chateauroux on Monday meant they will finish third in Ligue 2 behind Le Havre and Nantes, who had already secured promotion to Ligue 1. (Editing by Padraic Halpin)
