CAPE TOWN, March 23 (Reuters) - South Africa lock Victor Matfield, the man-of-the-match in last year's World Cup final, has committed himself to playing for the Springboks, the Afrikaans newspaper Sondag reported.

Sondag said Matfield had made a 24-hour round trip from France, where he plays for second division Toulon, to attend a one-hour meeting with new South Africa coach Peter de Villiers.

"We were very honest with each other and we both asked some tough questions and received straight answers," De Villiers told Sondag. "But at the end of the meeting Victor committed himself to the Springboks again."

According to newspaper reports, Matfield has said he would not play for the world champions unless his former provincial coach Heyneke Meyer was appointed as national coach ahead of De Villiers. (Reporting by Andy Colquhoun; Editing by John Mehaffey)
