EDINBURGH, March 8 (Reuters) - England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson became the leading points scorer in test rugby in the Six Nations match against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

He went into the game on 1090 points, level with Neil Jenkins of Wales, and set the record with a 27th-minute penalty.

However, with England losing 15-9 to the Scots, Wilkinson felt he had no great cause to celebrate after three penalties took his international tally to 1099.

"It wasn't a great day for (the record) but I wouldn't have given it much thought anyway," the modest Wilkinson, who always talks up the efforts of his team rather than his own, told reporters.

Wilkinson, 28, had drawn level with Jenkins after the International Rugby Board conferred test status on the British Lions match against Argentina in May 2005 in which he scored 20 points.

Wilkinson, who has endured an injury-blighted career after making his international debut in 1998, kicked England to the 2003 World Cup title after scoring a drop goal in the final minute of extra time.

He helped England reach a second successive World Cup final in France last October. (Reporting by Rex Gowar, editing by Justin Palmer)
