LA JOLLA, California, Feb 3 (Reuters) - The Fed Cup world group first round tie between the United States and Germany spilled over into a Monday finish after persistent rain wiped out any chance of play on Sunday.
Pools of water covered the outdoor hardcourt surface at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for most of the scheduled final day but conditions are expected to be mainly sunny on Monday.
The five-rubber tie is deadlocked at 1-1 after Fed Cup debutant Ashley Harkleroad spared the blushes for the U.S. by crushing Germany's Tatjana Malek 6-1 6-3 in Saturday's second singles match.
German teenager Sabine Lisicki, also a rookie in the team competition, had stunned former world number one Lindsay Davenport 6-1 7-5 in the opening encounter.
Davenport's shock defeat ended a run of 19 consecutive wins by the American in Fed Cup singles matches, dating back to the 1994 final in Frankfurt, Germany, where she lost 6-2 6-1 to Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
The 18-year-old Lisicki will take on Harkleroad in the second of the reverse singles encounters on Monday after Davenport plays Malek in the first match out, scheduled to start at 1000 local (1800 GMT).
The winners of the La Jolla tie will advance to a semi-final on April 26-27 when they will meet defending champions Russia, who beat Israel 4-1 in Tel Aviv earlier Sunday.
Hosts the United States, 17-times Fed Cup champions, are seeking their first title in the team competition since 2000. (Editing by Justin Palmer)
