Briefs-Wallabies cleared of injury, Hansen denied dual role
July 6 (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world:
Rugby - Australia centre Berrick Barnes and lock James Horwill have been cleared of serious injuries following the Wallabies' 40-10 bruising win over France in the second test in Brisbane on Saturday.
Horwill suffered an eye-socket injury after being hit by French forwards Renaud Boyoud and Imanol Harinordoquy during a first half brawl, while Barnes was replaced in the second half after picking up a shoulder problem.
Coach Robbie Deans said scans had subsequently cleared both players and they should be available for Australia's opening Tri-Nations test against South Africa in Perth on July 19.
Both Boyoud and Harinordoquy have been suspended for three weeks for their attack on Horwill.
Rugby - Assistant All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has withdrawn his application for the Canterbury Crusaders head coach's job after being denied permission to perform both roles, the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) has said.
The former Wales coach had indicated he wanted to apply for the post at the Super 14 champions and continue in his role with the All Blacks.
Hansen needed permission from the NZRU board to hold down both roles. However, the board refused to grant him dispensation to do so, the organisation said in a statement.
