CORRECTED - Soccer-Basel clinch Swiss title
(corrects number of league titles won by Basel in second para)
BASEL, Switzerland, May 10 (Reuters) - FC Basel completed a Swiss league and cup double on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win on the final day of the season over title rivals Young Boys Berne.
The victory brought Basel their 12th league title and the first in three years, after having missed out in the last round for the past two years.
Needing at least a draw against YB on Saturday, Basel took control in the 13th minute with a skilfully struck goal from former youth team player Valentin Stocker.
The Swiss teenager then set up Basel's second 10 minutes later, flicking the ball through for Marco Streller to fire in from close range.
Saturday's triumph cemented Basel trainer Christian Gross's reputation as his country's top coach.
The former Tottenham boss has now won four league championships and four cups with Basel, along with two league titles and a cup win with Grasshoppers Zurich.
Basel will enter the Champions League's second qualifying round while Young Boys join third-placed FC Zurich in next season's UEFA Cup qualifiers.
Swiss second division side Bellinzona also had cause to celebrate on Saturday with Basel's victory earning them an unlikely place in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.
Bellinzona, who are still in the hunt for promotion to Switzerland's top division, will receive the UEFA Cup spot as runners-up to Basel in this year's Swiss Cup final. (Writing by Mark Ledsom in Berne; editing by Justin Palmer)
