Italy antitrust probes 10 banks on mortgages
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's antitrust agency is probing 10 banks including the top two players Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.MI: Quote, Profile, Research) and UniCredit (CRDI.MI: Quote, Profile, Research) for incorrect practices on the transfer of mortgages, two sources familiar with the matter said.
Antitrust chief Antonio Catricala confirmed the investigation into 10 banks but did not name them.
The probe is part of a broader effort by Italy to make it easier for consumers to transfer mortgages from one bank to another without being charged penalties for doing so.
The other banks being probed are: Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI: Quote, Profile, Research), UBI Banca (UBI.MI: Quote, Profile, Research), Antonveneta, Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), Bnl, Popolare Milano (PMII.MI: Quote, Profile, Research), Banca Sella and Carige, said the sources, which include a source from a consumer group.
