(Reuters) - England and New Zealand, who meet in the first of a three-test series at Lord's on Thursday, have played 91 times. England have won 43 matches, New Zealand eight and there have been 40 draws.

* New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor, who is of Samoan descent, will become the first Pacific Islander to play at Lord's. Murphy Su'a is the only other player of Samoan heritage to represent New Zealand.

* The Kiwis have won only one test at Lord's. In 1999 they defeated England by nine wickets en route to winning a four-test series 2-1. Present captain Daniel Vettori, the only survivor from Stephen Fleming's side, scored 54 in New Zealand's first innings.

* In the 1978 test Ian Botham, at the height of his formidable powers, took 11 wickets as England under Mike Brearley won by seven wickets.

* New Zealand captain Bevan Congdon scored 175 in the 1973 test supported by centuries from Mark Burgess (105) and Vic Pollard (105 not out) to take his team to 551 for nine declared in their first innings. Keith Fletcher scored 178 in England's second innings to save the game.

* In 1958 New Zealand, who had slumped to a record test low innings score of 26 to England three years earlier, were beaten by an innings and 148 runs. The Surrey spin twins Jim Laker and Tony Lock took four for 13 and five for 17 in New Zealand's first innings 47.

* Martin Donnelly stroked 206 in New Zealand's first innings of 484 in the 1949 test. Denis Compton scored 116 for England in one of four three-day tests which were never going to reach a result with two powerful batting lineups.
