Chris Moyles wins breakfast battle
LONDON (Reuters) - Radio 1's Chris Moyles beat Johnny Vaughan of Capital 95.8 to win the best breakfast show prize at the annual Sony Radio Academy Awards.
Judges described Moyles' show as "creative, original and utterly brilliant", with a presenting team that sounds like work-mates having fun.
Moyles, who called himself "The Saviour of Early Morning Radio", used his acceptance speech to ask BBC audio and music director Jenny Abramsky for a pay rise.
"Jenny, you can sign it off before you leave," he joked.
The BBC was the big winner at the ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London on Monday.
Former Radio 1 DJ Simon Mayo, who hosts the afternoon show on Radio 5 Live, beat the Today programme's John Humphrys to be named speech broadcaster of the year.
Accepting the award, Mayo described Humphrys and co-host James Naughtie as "the Ant and Dec of breakfast radio".
Jonathan Ross picked up the music radio personality of the year prize for his Radio 2 show, while the station's Russell Brand won the entertainment prize.
Radio 4 was named station of the year and Planet Rock landed the best digital station prize. Continued...
