Gold steady above off 1-week low, watches dollar

SINGAPORE, July 8 (Reuters) - Gold steadied on Tuesday
after falling to a 1-week low hit the previous day, with
dealers closely watching movements in the U.S. dollar against
other currencies for direction.

-- Gold <XAU=> was at $925.25/926.25 an ounce, barely
changed from $925.15/926.35 an ounce late in New York. Gold
fell as low as $914.50 an ounce on Monday, its lowest level
since June 27, amid declines in commodities markets.

-- Gold futures for August delivery GCQ8 on the COMEX
division of the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $2.1 an ounce
to $926.7.

-- SPDR Gold Trust GLD.P, the world's largest gold-backed
exchange-traded fund, closed strong at 658.38 tonnes on Monday,
off a near-recordhigh at 658.57 tonnes hit last week.

-- The dollar rose versus the yen in choppy trade on Monday
as U.S. stocks recouped some losses despite renewed fears
financial institutions might be forced to write down more
mortgage-related assets and raise capital. [USD/]

-- Spot platinum <XPT=> rose to $1,980/1,990 an ounce from
$1,967/1,987 an ounce late in New York. It had dropped to
$1,962.50 an ounce on Monday, its lowest level since early
June, on fears of weakening demand.

-- Spot palladium <XPD=> fell to $442.00/450.00 an ounce
from $443.00/451.00 an ounce.

-- Silver <XAG=> edged up to $17.80/17.86 an ounce from
$17.79/17.84 late in London.

-- The most active Tokyo platinum contract for June 2009
delivery <0#JPL:> on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange fell 13 yen
per gram to 6,726 yen.
