FRANKFURT, May 12 (Reuters) - European shares turned flat in afternoon trading on Monday, taking their cue from Wall Street where leading indexes pared early gains to trade virtually unchanged.

At 1422 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.01 percent at 1,342.54 points, having risen as much as 0.8 percent earlier.

In the United States, the Dow Jones .DJI. was up 0.2 percent, the S&P 500 .SPX traded 0.02 percent lower and the Nasdaq .IXIC was 0.2 percent higher.

Volumes in Europe were thin due to partial holidays in some countries such as Germany and France. (Reporting by Peter Starck)
