FACTBOX-The Princess Diana conspiracies
LONDON (Reuters) - A decade after her death in a Paris road tunnel, conspiracy theories claiming Princess Diana was murdered continue to flourish. Here is a list of some of the most common and bizarre theories which some believe led to her death. THE ROYAL FAMILY The most commonly-reported conspiracy is that Diana and her lover Dodi al-Fayed were murdered by British secret agents from the overseas spy agency MI6 on the orders of the royal family. The theory, espoused by Dodi's father Mohamed al-Fayed, is based on the claim that the couple were engaged to be married and that Diana was pregnant. Al-Fayed argues that the royal family and the British establishment could not face the prospect of Diana's two sons having a Muslim stepfather and their very existence would be a millstone round the neck of the royals. There are many slightly varying theories based on this central premise, such as that rogue MI6 agents carried out the killing without their handlers knowledge. DIANA FAKED DEATH Fed up with the incessant press attention and intrusions into her private life Diana faked her death. To escape from the attention she set up a spectacular crash with the help of Dodi and is now living in peace somewhere. There is even a theory that the crash was meant to be a fake but went horribly wrong. ARMS DEALERS This is based on the idea Diana had become a loose cannon, politically speaking. Her aggressive campaigning for a ban on land mines and a reduction in arms sales was anathema to major armaments consortiums, defence contractors and some governments. One of these, or "rogue" elements, carried out her murder. THE MEROVIGIANS/NEW WORLD ORDER This theory is based on the belief all European royalty is descended from the Merovingians, a group that ruled France from around 500 to 750 AD. The belief, advocated by some on the Internet and possibly influenced by books such as "The Da Vinci Code", is that the Merovigians were descendants of Jesus Christ. To cut a complicated theory short, the argument is that Diana is a true descendant of the Merovigians but the British royal family are impostors. The theory states that one powerful dynasty in this new world order wanted Diana to marry former U.S. President Bill Clinton but a rival dynasty objected and Diana declined. And with Diana set on marrying Dodi, MI6 decided to kill her in the Pont de L'Alma tunnel because it was a pagan sacrificial site. SATANISTS One theory claims that Diana was killed as part of a Satanic rite. The claim is that an international cult of Satanists has figures in senior places in governments around the world. The theory states that in the run-up to her death Diana could be seen wearing outfits that confirmed her links with the occult.
