Soccer-Nations-More records in sight at African Nations Cup

ACCRA, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Records have been steadily tumbling at the African Nations Cup finals but there are still two more major landmarks to break at the tournament in Ghana.

Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o broke the 38-year-old all-time goal scoring record for the Nations Cup on Wednesday, passing Laurent Pokou's record of 14 goals and extending it to 16.

Eto'o started the tournament on 11 goals but has netted five in Ghana, albeit scoring three from the penalty spot.

He can now turn his attention to chasing the record for the most goals in a single tournament, set in 1974 by Mulamba Ndiaye.

Ndiaye's nine goals in the tournament hosted by Egypt ensured the title for Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Also under threat is the goal haul for a single tournament, set a decade ago in Burkina Faso.

Then, the 32 matches played produced 93 goals. With eight games to be played in Ghana, the tournament tally stands at 70 and is on course to come close to the record if the goal scoring form displayed at the tournament continues.

At the 1998 tournament in Burkina Faso, the first round matches produced 72 goals with 21 more in the knockout stages.  Continued...
