BERLIN, June 19 (Reuters) - A German official said on Thursday he expected U.S. authorities to clarify rapidly their decision on a refueling-tanker contract and voiced optimism they would confirm that a team including EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) had won it.

"I expect a fair process and a quick clarification," the government official, requesting anonymity, said.

"I am assuming, given the quality of the bid (from EADS and Northrop Grumman) and thanks to adherence to proper procedures, there will be a confirmation of the decision that the Americans reached. I am optimistic," the official said.

The $35 billion contract was awarded on Feb. 29 to a team including Airbus parent EADS and U.S. company Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC.N: Quote, Profile, Research), but U.S. auditors have urged the U.S. Air Force to rerun the competition, upholding a protest by rival bidder Boeing Co. (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research).
