BANGKOK, July 10 (Reuters) - Three-times Vietnam coach Alfred Riedl has taken over as boss of strugglers Laos, with a Vietnamese club paying his salary, the Austrian said on Friday.

Riedl, 59, who became a soccer icon in Vietnam after steering them to the 2007 Asian Cup quarter-finals, will coach the under-23 team ahead of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in December, which cash-strapped Laos is hosting.

"They couldn't score a single goal at the last SEA Games two years ago in Thailand," the former Austria Vienna and Royal Antwerp striker said in an e-mail.

"We want better results -- that's it." (Reporting by Martin Petty; Editing by John O'Brien; To query or comment on this story, e-mail sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
