* Calls for corrective action on 180,000 defibrillators
* Says malfunction may have contributed to two deaths
* Shares down as much as 11 percent in after-hours trade
April 2 (Reuters) - Zoll Medical Corp (ZOLL.O), a maker of cardiac resuscitation products, said it has advised customers to take corrective action on certain automated external defibrillators, after it found that a battery malfunction may have contributed to two patient deaths.
The company said that batteries on certain of its Zoll AED Plus defibrillators malfunctioned and a glitch in the internal testing software failed to warn on these defective batteries.
Zoll said there has been one clinical event and another customer reported incident in which a defibrillation shock was not delivered by the device, and the patient subsequently died.
The company has advised that all customers who have bought the AED Plus prior to Feb. 12 replace batteries older than three years and download and install a patch that will fix the software glitch.
The action is applicable to some 180,000 units.
Shares of the company were down as much as 11 percent in trading after the bell after closing at $14.13 Thursday on Nasdaq.
