UPDATE 1-Anesiva gets OK to expand use of pain drug Zingo
Jan 9 (Reuters) - Anesiva Inc (ANSV.O) said U.S. health regulators approved its application to expand the use of Zingo, which is used treat the pain associated with blood draws, to include adults, sending its shares up 66 percent.
The Zingo powder intradermal injection system was already approved to treat the pain associated with peripheral IV insertions and blood draws in children three to 18 years of age.
In November, the company ceased commercial activities of Zingo to focus on developing its experimental pain drug Adlea.
Adlea has had mixed success -- in November, it failed to meet the main goal in a late-stage trial to treat post-surgery pain, but in December Adlea met the main goal of a late-stage trial to treat pain after total knee replacement surgery.
The company said it is seeking to license Zingo as well as the underlying drug delivery technology and intellectual property.
Shares of Anesiva were trading at a high of $1.13 early Friday morning on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Jennifer Robin Raj in Bangalore; Editing by Pratish Narayanan)
