April 27 (Reuters) - Wausau Paper Corp (WPP.N) posted a narrower-than-expected first quarter loss as its printing & writing segment swung to a quarterly profit.

For the quarter ended March 31, the paper maker's net loss narrowed by almost 80 percent to $1.4 million, or 3 cents per share. Excluding items, Wausau earned a profit of 7 cents a share.

Analysts on average were expecting a loss of 2 cents a share, on revenue of $268.1 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

Wausau, which in March had said it would close its remaining paper machine in Maine and cut salaried workforce by 7 percent, said it expects its second-quarter results to be comparable with the adjusted first-quarter profit, excluding an expected facility closure charge of 27 cents per share.
