UPDATE 1-Wausau Q1 loss narrows

April 27 (Reuters) - Wausau Paper Corp (WPP.N) posted a narrower-than-expected first quarter loss as its printing & writing segment swung to a quarterly profit.
For the quarter ended March 31, the paper maker's net loss narrowed by almost 80 percent to $1.4 million, or 3 cents per share. Excluding items, Wausau earned a profit of 7 cents a share.
Analysts on average were expecting a loss of 2 cents a share, on revenue of $268.1 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
Wausau's printing & writing segment reported an operating profit of $0.3 million, compared with an operating loss $12.5 million an year ago.
Wausau, which in March had said it would close its remaining paper machine in Maine and cut salaried workforce by 7 percent, said it expects its second-quarter results to be comparable with the adjusted first-quarter profit, excluding an expected facility closure charge of 27 cents per share.
Shares of the company closed at $7.91 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.
