UPDATE 1-Nissan, Toyota hire temporary staff in Europe - Nikkei
June 16 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) are employing short-term factory workers in Europe once again to boost their small car output, the Nikkei business daily said.
Nissan brought onboard 150 temporary workers in May at its Sunderland factory in north England and followed that up in June by employing 100 workers on four-month contracts, the Nikkei reported.
The company will use the extra workers to produce 18,000 more units of mostly its compact car Micra, which is sold as the March in Japan, and Note, the daily said.
The increase adds roughly 5 percent to the total number of cars Nissan planned to make in fiscal 2009 in Europe, it said.
The Nikkei said Toyota was responding to the recovery in small car sales in Europe by hiring temporary workers at its factory in France.
Toyota expects to have 250 on the payroll by the end of June and will use them to make 7,000 more units of the Yaris, sold as the Vitz in Japan, than originally planned by the start of October, the daily said. (Reporting by Ashutosh Joshi in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
