May 20 (Reuters) - Hot Topic Inc (HOTT.O) turned to a quarterly profit as its trendy merchandise and aggressive discounting drove in more customers to its stores, but forecast second-quarter earnings below estimates, sending its shares down 9 percent in after-market trade. For the second quarter, the mall and web-based retailer expects a loss of 4 cents a share to 6 cents a share, including charges related to its newly launched web-based store, ShockHound.

Hot Topic also projected a comparable sales dip in the mid-single-digit percentage range for the same quarter.

Analysts were expecting a profit of 1 cent for the second quarter.

For the latest quarter ended May 2, the company, which operates its namesake and Torrid stores apart from the web-based music store ShockHound.com, earned $1.2 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a net loss of 1.4 million, or 3 cents a share in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue rose 10.1 percent to $175.1 million, while same-store sales, or those at stores open for at least a year, rose 7.1 percent during the quarter.  Continued...
