July 11 (Reuters) - Repros Therapeutics Inc (RPRX.O) said its lead experimental drug Proellex significantly relieved pain in women suffering from endometriosis, a condition affecting the uterus, according to the interim analysis of a mid-stage trial.

Data showed reduction in pain, which is a key symptom associated with endometriosis, was statistically and clinically meaningful in one to two months of treatment with Proellex than with placebo, the company said in a statement.

Endometriosis is growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus, usually in the pelvic area.

The company said the 25 mg and 50 mg doses of its drug were not significantly different in reducing pain. Most side effects were mild, it said.

Repros said the 50 mg dose of the drug was better at relieving pain than Abbott Laboratories' (ABT.N) Lupron -- which is currently used to treat endometriosis, uterine fibroids and prostate cancer.

Shares of Repros closed at closed at $8.90 Thursday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Varsha Tickoo in Bangalore; Editing by Vinu Pilakkott)
