* SAMARRA - The al Qaeda-led Islamic State in Iraq claimed responsibility for a suicide car bomb attack that killed a dozen police officers in the city of Samarra on Sunday, the group said in a statement posted on the Internet.

BALAD - Iraqi special forces captured a suspected insurgent cell leader near the town of Balad on Sunday, the U.S. military said. It said the leader was suspected of financing al Qaeda operations. Eight other people were detained in the raid.

BAGHDAD - An American soldier was killed by small arms fire while on patrol in western Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

DUBAI - The self-styled Islamic State in Iraq, an al Qaeda-led militant group, said it was holding nine Iraqi police and defence personnel and demanded the release of all Sunni Muslim women prisoners in exchange for their freedom. The group said the policemen being held included high-ranking officers.

NEAR RAMADI - Two suicide car bombs killed 25 people and wounded dozens more near the town of al-Jazeera, home of tribal leaders fighting al-Qaeda, near Ramadi, 110 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Five people were killed and two wounded by a mortar attack on the al-Saidiya district of southern Baghdad, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - Two people were killed and 10 wounded by a mortar attack on the town of Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.
