TIMELINE - The shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes
LONDON (Reuters) - London's Metropolitan Police was found guilty on Thursday of putting the public at risk over the killing of an innocent Brazilian mistaken for a suicide bomber in 2005.
Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead on July 22, 2005 by armed police at Stockwell underground station after being mistaken for one of four men who had tried to carry out suicide bombings on London's transport system the day before.
Here is a chronology of the main details surrounding the incident.
July 7, 2005: Four young British Islamists carry out suicide bomb attacks on three underground trains and a bus, killing 52 people.
July 21: Four other men try to replicate the carnage of July 7, but their homemade bombs fail to explode. All four go on the run and police launch the country's biggest ever manhunt.
July 22: At about 9.20 a.m. de Menezes leaves his home in Tulse Hill, south London and heads off to work. He is wearing a denim jacket and is not carrying a bag.
He catches a bus to Brixton, his nearest underground station, but as trains are not running from there, he takes another bus to Stockwell. At the station, he picks up a free paper, walks through the barriers, runs on to the platform as a train pulls in, and gets on board.
Shortly after 10 a.m., a plain clothes officer points out de Menezes to colleagues. Armed officers board the carriage, push the Brazilian to the floor and shoot him eight times, hitting him seven times in the head and once in the shoulder.
July 23: At about 4.52 p.m. police issue a statement saying they are satisfied the man they shot was not connected to the July 21 attacks. They later issue a statement saying the dead man had been formally identified as de Menezes. Continued...
