TEHRAN, June 13 (Reuters) - European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana arrived in Tehran late on Friday for talks aimed at helping to resolve a dispute over Iran's nuclear ambitions, Solana's spokeswoman said.

Solana, who meets Iranian officials on Saturday, is expected to hand over a package of incentives offered by six world powers in exchange for Iran suspending sensitive nuclear work they fear is aimed at making bombs.

Iran says its atomic work is solely aimed at generating electricity so the world's fourth-largest crude producer can export more oil and gas.

It has repeatedly ruled out halting uranium enrichment, which can have both civilian and military uses.

Solana has said he hopes his visit will start a new process for resolving the standoff diplomatically but has played down prospects for a breakthrough.

The United States and the 27-nation EU have warned of more sanctions if Tehran does not stop enrichment.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France -- and Germany agreed the incentives package in May but it has yet to be made public.

It is an updated and enhanced version of an offer rejected by Iran in 2006, which included civilian nuclear cooperation and wider trade in aircraft, energy, high technology and agriculture. (Reporting by Parisa Hafezi; Editing by Alison Williams)
