LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) - Quintiles Transnational, a U.S.-based pharmaceutical services company, is weighing a counterbid for Britain's Clinphone CNP1.L that would trump an $182 million agreed bid from biotech firm Parexel International (PRXL.O).

"Quintiles believes that the operations of Clinphone are a strategic fit with Quintiles' clinical research capabilities and confirms that its has been in discussions with the board of Clinphone which may or may not lead to an offer," Quintiles said in a statement.

Quintiles added that any offer would be in cash and would be pitched at a premium to Parexel's bid.

Parexel's offer, which was at an 86 percent premium to Clinphone's share price of 72-1/2 pence on Feb. 14, the day before Parexel announced an initial approach, values Clinphone at 135 pence per share.

Boston-based Parexel said it has arranged a $300 million loan facility to fund the deal, which it said is expected to be earnings enhancing in the year to the end of June 2009.

Shares in Clinphone were up 41 percent at 145p at 1230 GMT. (Reporting by Paul Sandle; Editing by David Holmes)
