Soccer-Crespo anxious to play at Copa America

BUENOS AIRES, May 15 (Reuters) - Argentina striker Hernan Crespo said on Tuesday he hoped to be called up for the Copa America, a tournament at which he has yet to play.

"I'd like to play at the Copa America because this is my last chance," the 31-year-old told the sports daily Ole in an interview.

"It means a lot because, thanks to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, football history was made in South America.

"As a supporter, I remember very well 1987, when it was played in Argentina, and I went mad with enjoyment when we won in 1991 and 1993.

"Since 1995, I've watched as a professional. But for one reason or another, I've never been there."

He has missed out on playing in the Copa America over the years because Argentina have often sent experimental teams to the competition because of fixture congestion.

Crespo, who has scored 14 Serie A goals this season for Inter Milan, said it could be his last chance to win something with Argentina.

"Apart from the Olympic Gold medal in 2004 and the silver in 1996, there is a generation of players who have been unable to match, at national team level, the titles they have won with their clubs.

"And there's also the chance to get our own back for that defeat on penalties against Brazil in 2004."
